Applying for OBT in the old system
The old system (harjoitelumylly.fi) will stop working 1.10.2022! Read here where to make a new application.
You can get an OBT-placement by creating a profile on the website Harjoittelumylly.fi. You must also meet other conditions (more below). This page contains information for those who create a profile for the first time as well as for students who already have a profile.
The student him/herself is responsible for the information provided and also for updating of the information. If the information in the application is not up-to-date, the OBT application will not be processed.
New applicant
When you create an account for the first time, click the “Create New Account” button on the home page. To complete your profile, you need a valid seafarer’s medical certificate, passport, and seaman’s passport. You must give the expiration date of all three documents, so it is a good idea to keep them close at hand when creating your account.
Fill in personal data, contact details, passport details and information regarding OBT.
Under Language Skills, you indicate the languages you understand and can speak (your language does not have to be fluent. You will learn maritime terminology during the OBT). On most vessels, the working language is English.
In the Certificates part, you are asked about Certificates of Competence (CoC) and completed courses. The courses included in (BST) Basic Safety Training (Fire Prevention and Fire Fighting, Elementary First Aid, Personal Survival Techniques, and Personal Safety and Social Responsibilities) must be completed before you can participate in OBT. So tick off Basic Safety Training in your profile as soon as you have completed the courses. You can get a CoC after completing 60 days of seagoing service, “60 sea days”. Tick off CoCs when you have received one from Traficom, not before.
In the Other Information part, you can briefly describe what you consider important for HarjoitteluMylly to know or consider regarding your OBT.
Your seafarer’s medical certificate, seaman’s passport and passport must all be valid throughout the OBT.
HarjoitteluMylly provides placements for OBT in different departments: deck-, engine-, electro-technical-, and catering. Select the right department for your degree as you create your user profile.
OBT is divided into levels, rating’s OBT and officer’s OBT. The level of your OBT is determined by your degree and your accumulated experience. Rating’s OBT is for for watchkeeping rating, repairman or electro-technical rating. Officer’s OBT is for deck officer, watchkeeping engineer or electro-technical officer.
If you get an error message, make sure that all required data has been filled in. If required information is missing, the profile is not updated.
Apply for OBT well in advance. HarjoitteluMylly notes the date you have submitted your application for OBT. The earlier you submitted your application, the greater the likelihood that you will get a placement earlier. Each time you change the desired start or end date of your OBT in your profile, the application date changes.
When your application now is active, it will be processed at HarjoitteluMylly. When an OBT-placement is available, we will contact you by phone. Be available by phone!

Old Salts
It is likely that you already have done some OBT through Merenkulun HarjoitteluMylly and that you now want to do OBT again.
This is how you apply for a new OBT:
- Sign into your profile
- Update your profile here: “Edit” → “Profile”
- Make sure all information is correct. Check, for example, the seafarer’s medical certificate, both passports, and the total number of sea days.
- Under Onboard Training, fill in the desired start and end dates. Make sure you have not ticked the point “I don’t need onboard training at the moment.” If the point is marked/ticked, you will not appear as an applicant for OBT.
- Save
If you get an error message, make sure that all required data has been filled in. If required information is missing, the profile is not updated.
When your application now is active again, it will be processed by HarjoitteluMylly, and you will be contacted by phone when an OBT-placement is available. Be available by phone!
Apply for OBT in good time! HarjoitteluMylly notes the date you have submitted your application for supervised onboard training. Each time you change the desired start or end date of your OBT in your profile, the application date changes.
Tick the point “I do not need onboard training at the moment” if you do not want to apply for a placement or do not need OBT. Then you will not appear as an active applicant for OBT.
