How to apply for OBT in the new system

From 1.10.2022 onwards, all OBT applications to the new system! The old one will stop working.

You can get an OBT-placement by creating an account, sending in an application and by meeting other conditions (more below). This page contains information for those who are createing an account for the first time as well as for students who already have one.

The student him/herself is responsible for the information provided and also for updating it. If the information in the application is not up-to-date, the OBT application will not be processed.

New applicant

When creating an account for the first time, press the “Login” button in the upper right corner of this page. You will end up on the page admin.kvarnen.harjoittelumylly.fi, in the bottom corner it says “Don’t have an account yet?”, press create account.

To complete your profile, you need a valid seafarer’s medical certificate, passport, and seaman’s passport. You must give the expiration date of all three documents, so it is a good idea to keep them close at hand when creating your account.

Fill in personal data, contact details, passport details and information regarding OBT.

Under Language Skills, you indicate the languages you understand and can speak (your language does not have to be fluent but enough to understand the ship’s safety instructions). On most vessels, the safety and working language is English.

In the Other Information part, you can briefly describe what you consider important for HarjoitteluMylly to know or consider regarding your OBT.

In section “onboard availability” mark the time when you can do OBT. You can have up to three OBT applications at the same time. If you know dates of future OBTs, you should notify them well in advance. HarjoittuMylly can see the date when you submitted the application, and a timely application is one factor that affects getting an OBT placement. See other influencing factors here. Each time you change the desired start or end date of your OBT in your profile, the application date changes. If you don’t want to apply or don’t need OBT, remove the marked dates from the “onboard training availability” section.

HarjoitteluMylly provides placements for OBT in different departments: deck-, engine-, electro-technical-, combined and catering. Select the right department for your degree as you create your user profile.

OBT is divided into levels, rating’s OBT and officer’s OBT. The level of your OBT is determined by your degree and your accumulated experience. Rating’s OBT is for for watchkeeping rating, repairman or electro-technical rating. Officer’s OBT is for deck officer, watchkeeping engineer or electro-technical officer. If you are applying for a combined training (YT/AT), please read the policies first.

Your seafarer’s medical certificate, seaman’s passport and passport must all be valid throughout the OBT.

In the Certificates part, you are asked about Certificates of Competence (CoC) and completed courses. The courses included in (BST) Basic Safety Training (Fire Prevention and Fire Fighting, Elementary First Aid, Personal Survival Techniques, and Personal Safety and Social Responsibilities) must be completed before you can participate in OBT. So tick off Basic Safety Training in your profile as soon as you have completed the courses. You can get a CoC after completing 60 days of seagoing service, “60 sea days”. Tick off CoCs when you have received one from Traficom, not before.

If you get an error message, make sure that all required data has been filled in. If required information is missing, the profile is not updated.

When the application is submitted, it will be processed at HarjoitteluMylly. When an OBT-placement is available, you will be contacted you by phone or email. Information about confirming an OBT placement here.
